Hello! My name is Sarah Powers, and I am so lucky to be the TK teacher at Olivet Elementary! I knew I wanted to be a teacher at just 5 years old and still think it’s the best job in the world! I went to school at Santa Rosa JC and Sonoma State and earned degrees in Early Childhood Development, Behavioral Science, and Liberal Studies, as well as a multiple subject teaching credential. I have also had the fun experience of being a lead art instructor at Camp Galileo in the Bay Area for 5 years which taught me a lot about the importance of fun, hands-on learning. I started my first official teaching job right out of college and taught first grade for 4 years before finding Transitional Kindergarten, my true love!
One of the reasons I love teaching TK is because there is still so much magic in learning. I love seeing pure happiness in a student who just learned that their name starts with the letter of the week, or to see eyes fill with amazement in a class that just watched a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. I also love the relationships that I build with students and their families. I feel so lucky I get to be the first step in their child’s academic journey and sthrive to make it as special as possible. In TK you can expect your student to learn foundational academic content like letters, sounds, numbers, counting, etc. One of the greatest areas of learning in TK is in relation to their social emotional growth. We learn how to identify our feelings, use our tools, and problem solve. At this age we know that students learn the most through meaningful work and lots of play! Parent helpers are also an important role in our classroom. In TK we go on some fun field trips like a trip to the pumpkin patch and exploring the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County. Coming Soon... |
